The Five Elements: The Cycle of Life

In this course you’ll learn about:

  • The Dao

  • Yin/Yang

  • Chi energy

  • The Natural Laws

  • The Five Elements

Five Element Acupuncture is an ancient, yet vibrantly alive healing tradition

Thousands of years ago the ancient Daoists saw clearly that:

The energies of nature also exist in us

The Daoists observed that:

  • All life moves in cycles.

  • Every cycle has five distinct phases.

  • Each phase has a particular energetic movement.

Whether it’s the life cycle of a project, the seasons of the year, or your entire life, each cycle has to go through the same five phases.

The Five Elements are the phases in every cycle

  • First, there has to be an initiation: a powerful upsurge of growth and birth (The Wood Element / Spring).

  • This is followed by a maturation, flowering and expansive phase (The Fire Element / Summer).

  • Next comes abundance and the fruits of the labours (The Earth Element / The Harvest).

  • Then follows a phase of consolidation and letting go of what no longer serves us (The Metal Element / Autumn).

  • Finally we see a stillness and rest as the energy gathers strength, germinates and gestates (The Water Element / Winter) ready for the next cycle of growth.

Spiritual and emotional functions of the Elements

Each element exists within us also. For example the Wood Element manifests as the liver and gallbladder. These two organs also have emotional and spiritual functions.

The liver allows us to make plans and have a vision of our future. The gallbladder allows us to make decisions and to have clear judgement. But when these functions go out of balance we show clear signs that a trained acupuncturist can pick up with their senses. For example the patient will give off a rancid smell. This is due to the poor functioning of the gallbladder which is responsible for breaking down fats and oils in the body. With the fats unable to be digested properly, the rancid odour arises from oils that start to go off, much like butter left out in the sun.

Western medicine even acknowledges that the body changes in odour when illness and imbalance set in.

I remember going for my first acupuncture session

I was feeling awful. But on the surface I was still putting on a brave face. My acupuncturist, Dave, was very skilled at putting me at ease. He gave me the space to talk about what was really on my mind. For the first time I was able to start to admit the depth of the emptiness I was feeling. I felt the pressure of holding it all in start to lift, even before he did any treatment. He helped to shed light on my feelings and let me know that they were ok. I was normal for feeling confused and upset.

I remember leaving feeling somehow lighter and more alive. Was this real or just placebo?

The next day I went to lectures as normal but something was different. I felt a connection and warmth with my classmates that I hadn’t been able to sense before. Dave explained to me that I had become cut off from myself and that the treatment he did was to reconnect me with the deepest parts of myself.

After an initial training in art, specialising in theatre design, I lived in Asia for several years, where I ran my own highly successful jewellery manufacturing business. On my return to the UK I was treated with acupuncture, which I was surprised to find not only improved my health, but also provided invaluable support through a bereavement and period of major life changes. I was impressed and inspired by this simple yet profoundly effective form of medicine, and made the decision to study and become a practitioner in 2000.
